About Abraham Lincoln Elementary School

Established in 1871, Abraham Lincoln Elementary School, a Chicago Public School, has been in existence for over 145 years. The original school building, completed in 1871, once served as temporary refuge for the homeless of the Great Chicago Fire. Lincoln School grew rapidly along with the largely German Lincoln Park neighborhood. As a result of its growth, an addition to the school was completed in 1894; this addition is in use today. In 1937, the original 1871 building was razed and the Public Works Administration set forth to build the east structure with its completion in 1939. In 2015, another addition was constructed which added 17 classrooms to the school.
As a neighborhood school, Lincoln Elementary School has proudly served the community of Lincoln Park. Lincoln students have received awards of excellence in national competitions such as National History Day and the Scripps-Howard Spelling Bee. Many of our graduates have been recognized as National Merit Scholars and have received the International Gifted Diploma.
Throughout the years, Abraham Lincoln Elementary School has been instrumental in Chicago’s educational development. Lincoln is home to the Ecole Franco-Américaine de Chicago (Ecole Franco-Américaine de Chicago), a tuition-supported program with a curriculum certified by the French government for K-8 native speakers of French.
Innovative learning experiences are often supported by initiatives and grants. A few examples include the World Language French Program, our grades 5-8 band program, and the Greenhouse/Green Roof learning space. Grants have supported our humanities-based curriculum through technology, the arts, and literacy programs.
Abraham Lincoln Elementary School educates approximately 1,000 students. It has a superb teaching and support staff of approximately 65 members. The Lincoln School is recognized as a model school within the Chicago Public Schools. We set the highest standards for our students in academic achievement, intellectual growth and rigor, ethical awareness and behavior, and exceptional sportsmanship. Our balance of tradition and innovation continue to provide excellent opportunities to students from diverse social, ethnic, and socio-economic backgrounds.
Come join the traditions we hold true and experience the best in public education.
