Lincoln Gives Back - "Kindness Club"
Lincoln Gives Back
Lincoln Gives Back is a PTA initiative to give Lincoln students and families opportunities to contribute and learn about needs in our community and worldwide. We do this both by collecting needed items and by offering hands-on local volunteer projects for Lincoln families through the Kindness Club.
EXAMPLES OF ORGANIZED DONATIONS FROM YEAR'S PAST:
- Winter Outerware Collection (late October). Working with the Salvation Army, we will collect gently used coats, scarves, hats, and gloves/mittens for adults and children. The Salvation Army will distribute them directly to needy individuals and families in Chicago.
- Share Your Soles Shoe Drive (mid-February). We will again collect gently used shoes, boots and sandals to help those who have no shoes worldwide. Share Your Soles will distribute donated shoes directly to desperately poor adults and children around the world.
- Chicago Homeless Teens Supply Collection (early May). Working with local organizations serving homeless teens in Chicago, Lincoln Gives Back will collect new school and health supplies to help the 2,000+ teens who are homeless in Chicago on any given night.
Lincoln’s Kindness Club
In January 2014, inspired by one parent’s example, Lincoln Gives Back started the Kindness Club for Lincoln families. It’s for those of us who would like to volunteer with our families but… we don’t have the ability to do it on a regular basis, or we can’t find a program that will take young kids, or we just have too much going on to get a volunteer activity scheduled. Honestly, we need something simple, irregular, and that someone else organizes!
Enter the Kindness Club: volunteer activities offered monthly-ish on a weekend day, for Lincoln families, that we can do together or that your family can do independently by a certain deadline. Interested families sign up to get an email about upcoming projects. If you can do the project that month, great! If not, no big deal – there will be another project that you might be able to make.
This fall, we will help distribute food with Ravenswood Community Services on October 14th and “adopt” families for the holidays through the Children’s Place Association in November/December. We’ll have many more fun projects coming for this school year. All ages are welcome.
We have about 175 Lincoln families signed up to learn about Kindness Club projects. If you’re interested in joining the list to be notified about registration for upcoming projects, or have ideas for any Lincoln Gives Back projects, please contact Erin Retif (firstname.lastname@example.org), who is the Lincoln Gives Back coordinator.
