Dear Lincoln Families,
I hope that you and your children have had a nice start to the school year. Thank you for reading this month’s Principal's Digest. Please refer to our school website calendar (http://www.lincolnelementary.org/calendar.html) on a regular basis to keep abreast of events at the school. There is always something interesting happening at Lincoln School.
Thank you, Mark Armendariz Principal High school applications for the 2018-19 school year at Chicago Public Schools are now available on GoCPS!
This year we are making it easier to apply to every CPS high school with one site, one application and one deadline at go.cps.edu. Applications will be accepted from October 10 through December 22, and students and families should take their time to carefully evaluate the best options for them. Through the application process, students can apply to up to 20 Non-Selective Enrollment programs and six Selective Enrollment programs. As part of the process, you will rank your choices in order of preference and then in March of 2018, you’ll receive a single best offer to your highest ranked program with available seats. We know this is both an exciting and stressful time for 8th grade families and a lot of big decisions lie ahead, but the entire Chicago Public Schools team is here to support you through every step of the process. Your elementary school counselors, your principals, your teachers, the Office of Access and Enrollment and a wide variety of community partners are all here to answer questions and help you think about your decisions. We will be providing more information in the coming weeks, including events and activities where you can learn more about schools and the GoCPS platform. So we encourage you to use these next two and a half months to ask questions, research, plan, and make thoughtful application decisions. There’s no need to rush. Best wishes for a great application season! Visit GoCPS Web Browser - GoCPS is optimized for view on Chrome and Safari web browsers. We recommend using one of these to access the site. Need Help? If you have any questions, contact the Office of Access and Enrollment at 773-553-2060 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, or email gocps@cps.edu. Sincerely, Mark Armendariz Principal Dear LINCOLN SCHOOL Families:
Earlier this week you received a letter detailing our District's contingency plans in the event of a strike by the Chicago Teachers Union (CTU). I join with CPS leadership and many others in the belief that a strike can be avoided through continued negotiations, but know each of you have real concerns about what happens should a strike occur. What You Should Know: We encourage you to keep your student(s) at home or at a non-CPS facility during the strike. CTU leadership has issued a 10-day strike notice. With this action, a strike could begin as early as Tuesday (October 11). In the event of a strike:
Where Can I Find More Information? For contingency site locations, hours of operation, and frequently asked questions, visitcps.edu/strikeplan or call 311. We may not know whether there will be a strike until the end of the weekend, but I will continue to provide updates via email as they occur. I encourage you to look for emails to make sure have the most accurate information about our District's status. I know this time is a challenging one for our entire school community, and I thank you for your patience and support as we make certain we're prepared. Thank you, Mark Armendariz Principal June 15, 2016
Dear Lincoln Elementary Families, Chicago Public Schools are in crisis – but you can make a difference at Lincoln. Historic budget cuts are on the horizon and the time to take action is now. While advocacy efforts are critical for the long-term health of the system, we are writing with a short-term solution that will safeguard the integrity of our school. Together, Mr. Armendariz and the five Lincoln parent organizations are launching an early Phon-a-thon/Pledge Drive for the 2016/2017 school year. Our target goal is significantly increased—as we hope to cover the anticipated shortfall of $1,000 per student through pledged gifts received by June 30, 2016. Mr. Armendariz shared in his June 9th letter that individual school budgets could be cut by 20-30%. Assuming a worst-case scenario, Lincoln’s annual operating budget could be reduced by as much as $1.4 million. Without your early pledged support, drastic reductions in staffing and programs will forever alter our neighborhood school. These decisions will be made while summer vacation is in full swing, so it is imperative that we launch this pledge drive now. What’s at stake?
Our Short-Term Solution for the Year Ahead:
If we achieve this fundraising target, FOL will not conduct the Fall Phon-a-thon, yet FOL will continue with the Winter Auction and Spring Fun Run for normal fundraising needs. How you can make an impact:
This is a time when the community nature of engaging in a public school presents us with both an opportunity and a responsibility. Our children’s future is in our hands. And, as a collective whole, we can safeguard all that makes Chicago great and makes Lincoln, Lincoln. Thank you in advance for your partnership, Mark Armendariz FOL LSC PTA EFAC ALESMA Dear Lincoln Families, As you know, this Friday, April 1, there will be no school for CPS students due to the Chicago Teachers Union "Call of Action." CPS has identified 250 contingency sites throughout the city for children unable to stay home this Friday; Lincoln School is NOT one of these contingency sites. Lincoln School will be closed. Please see the attached letter from CPS. Here is what I know regarding the contingency sites: 1. go to www.cps.edu (CPS main website). At the top of the site is a link for contingency site locations and information at www.cps.edu/april1 2. This site is self-explanatory. Below is some information for you I gleaned when I accessed the site 3. There are three contingency sites for elementary school children near our school 4. The three sites near our school are: Lincoln Park Library, 1150 W. Fullerton, 9:00-5:00, no pre-registration required; Newberry Elementary School, 700 W. Willow St., 8:30-3:30, registration requested to be done on the www.cps.edu/april1 website; Lincoln Park, 200 W. Fulleron Parkway, 8:30-3:30, registration requested to be done on the www.cps.edu/april1 website. 5. There are many other contingency sites and you can locate them through the www.cps.edu/april1 website 6. In order to register your child for one of these contingency sites you must enter your child's CPS student identifcation number. This identification number may be found on your child's report cards and progress reports. As stated by CPS CEO Mr. Claypool in his March 24th letter (emailed to you last week), he encourages you to keep your child home on Friday, April 1. If you are unable to do so, you may wish to consider bringing your child to one of the contingency sites. Also, remember that this Friday is NOT considered a day of absence for your child.
